The Buddha taught about Vedanta or feeling tone ie everything we come across in the conditioned world produces one of three qualities within us - pleasant, unpleasant or neutral. When something produces a pleasant tone we cling to it and crave more. When something produces an unpleasant tone we want to push it away and get rid of it. When something produces neither and so is neutral we feel bored or indifferent and want something more pleasant. We evolved this way to survive.
